Kickin' it with Kaitlyn!

Here's a playful Q&A with our newest Project Interior Designer, Kaitlyn Barrett!

Adrienne: Dog Mom, huh? So, what are your thoughts on dogs?

Kaitlyn: I’m obsessed. Specifically with my doghter, Olive.

A: The Enneagram is all the rage. What type are you?

K: Type 3 or Type 1. Can’t decide

A: What is home to you?

K: Wherever my family is. They are home to me.

A: Speaking of family, tell us a little bit about them!

K: I’m the youngest and the only girl. My oldest brother Matt lives in LA and Bryant lives in Lafayette. He and his wife just had a baby – Fiona.

A: Where did you grow up?

K: Born and raised in Indianapolis, raised and went to Noblesville High School.

A: How would your best friends describe you?

K: (Texting them to ask): Boss lady. Stylish. Determined. Anxious. Goal-driven. She keeps it real. Very real.

A: Salty or savory.

K: Sweet!

A: So, how did you first become interested in Interior Design?

K: I realized I had equal right and left brain; I loved all the aspects of art, math and science. In 5th grade I committed to be an Interior Designer and I haven’t changed my mind since! Purdue was my choice for college. Right out of college, I worked for an architecture engineering firm as a contractor and then transitioned to another firm.

A: What is your greatest interior design achievement?

K: Most recently, the Best In Show @ The IDEA Awards. What. An. Honor.

A: What is your favorite Interior Design trend and why?

K: I’m super excited that everyone is making everything neutral. I have always loved neutral colors and texture. I’ve always gone that way and believe that less is more. You don’t have to have crazy color everywhere. Color should be intentional or it can come off really cheap.

A: Outside of Interior Design, what is your passion project?

K: Olive + Wool! I started knitting in the 7th grade and taught myself to crochet on YouTube! A few years ago I had a goal to finish one blanket which was my gateway into my side hustle, Olive + Wool (named after my two favorite things). Right now, I’m knitting in my free time for family and friends and I love it.

A: Where would we find you on a Saturday afternoon?

K: Knitting with my dog. My mom bought me a shirt that says KnitFlix. That’s pretty accurate.

A: Favorite time of the day?

K: Depends on the day.

A: What’s one thing you have always dreamed about?

K: I would love to live in the city where everyone is moving, but I also love the quiet. Eventually designing an A frame in the woods is my dream. I would design it, live in it, and then rent it out on Airbnb.

A: Share something that will surprise us about you.

K: I’m a total book worm! And being Type A, I have a list of all the books I have read on my phone since 2014. My goal is to read 12 books in a year. Maybe this will be the year! My favorite book I recently read is: Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.

A: That’s impressive! Serious question: What would you put on your Nachos?

K: I’m really picky. Just chicken or beef, queso for sure, sour cream. And I just learned that I love jalapneos. Where have these been all my life?

To live a creative life, you must lose the fear of being wrong.

A: Favorite quote or words to live by?

K: To live a creative life, you must lose the fear of being wrong (Joseph Chilton Pearce).

A: How do you want to be remembered?

K: For not being afraid to be myself – as a designer and a person.

A: What are you most grateful for?

K: My family – and right now, my new baby niece.
